Postecoglou and Frank set for World Cup punditry clash
Former Tottenham Hotspur managers Ange Postecoglou and Thomas Frank are set to go head-to-head this summer after signing up as rival World Cup pundits, reports BritPanorama.
Postecoglou and Frank, having recently exited their Premier League managerial roles, are transitioning to television during the tournament hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Frank is expected to join BBC Sport as a leading analyst, while Postecoglou will be part of ITV Sport’s coverage.
Both former managers are preparing to offer expert insight throughout the World Cup, marking their first public roles since departing from management. Frank has yet to publicly address his dismissal from Tottenham in February, following a challenging tenure marked by a win percentage of just 34.2 per cent, the lowest for any permanent manager in the club’s history.
Postecoglou, too, has maintained a low profile since his brief stint with Nottingham Forest ended in October after just 39 days. The Australian was dismissed following a disappointing home defeat to Chelsea. Notably, Olivier Giroud is also joining the BBC’s punditry team for the tournament.
The BBC and ITV are scheduled to share live UK television rights for the World Cup, with the final airing on July 19. ITV will broadcast England’s opening match against Croatia and their final group game against Panama, while the BBC is set to cover the Three Lions’ second match against Ghana. Overall, the BBC is expected to air 54 matches with ITV showing 51, ensuring viewers across the United Kingdom have access to all 104 games live.
ITV’s coverage is reportedly based in a studio in Brooklyn with a view of the Manhattan skyline, featuring Mark Pougatch and Laura Woods as hosts. Meanwhile, the BBC’s presenting team, including Mark Chapman, Gabby Logan, and Kelly Cates, will remain in Salford until at least the quarter-finals. The BBC’s decision reflects financial and environmental considerations aimed at reducing air travel and carbon footprint.
Although Frank and Postecoglou will not be on the touchline this summer, their roles as analysts will be crucial in bringing the excitement of the World Cup to viewers at home, a testament to how the world of football continues to evolve even outside the pitch.
