Hantavirus-hit cruise ship passengers to be monitored in Nebraska

Passengers from a cruise ship affected by hantavirus will be taken to Nebraska for monitoring as health officials assess the situation, reports BritPanorama.

The University of Nebraska Medical Center, the only facility of its kind designated for such monitoring, will be responsible for the medical care of the disembarking passengers. Dr. H. Dele Davis, interim chancellor of the medical center, highlighted its unique design, featuring “negative pressure rooms” that contain any potentially infectious diseases.

These specially constructed rooms include filtering systems to ensure that any air leaving the rooms is sanitized. Dr. Davis described the accommodations as akin to hotel rooms, equipped with exercise equipment, room service, monitors, and WiFi, catering to the well-being of passengers during their observation period.

Upon arrival, individuals will be screened for early symptoms of hantavirus, including fever, muscle aches, and diarrhea. Should any passengers display these signs, the center is prepared with a team of medical professionals and a bio-containment unit previously used for Covid and Ebola cases.

Dr. Davis assessed the risks posed to the broader US population, indicating that the threat remains low. “The hantavirus is one that is not easy to get; you have to be in fairly close contact with someone who has developed the symptoms… so the risk of transmission is low,” he stated.

As authorities continue to monitor the situation, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of the returning passengers while addressing public health concerns.
