Emma Raducanu targets return at WTA event in Strasbourg

Emma Raducanu is set to return to competitive tennis at the WTA event in Strasbourg, following a two-month absence attributed to a post-viral illness, reports BritPanorama.

The British number one withdrew from the Italian Open after travelling to Rome and training at the Foro Italico. Her decision raised concerns regarding her readiness for the upcoming Roland Garros tournament, which commences on May 24.

Raducanu’s path to recovery began after she struggled with her health since early February, leading to early exits in various tournaments including those in the Middle East and Indian Wells before she paused her circuit participation. She will seek a wild card entry for the Strasbourg event, anticipated for the week before the French Open.

Describing her condition, Raducanu stated, “Post-viral, it’s quite hard. You feel drained, you feel tired, no energy. It’s difficult, and it lingered for quite a while.” She acknowledged she is not yet at full fitness, adding, “Right now, I wouldn’t say I’m 100 per cent. I’m still building my way back.”

During her time away from competitive play, Raducanu has trained with Andrew Richardson, who previously coached her to victory at the US Open in 2021. Despite her recent setbacks, the opportunity in Strasbourg represents a critical step towards regaining competitive form and reshaping her season.

This return comes at a pivotal moment, as she attempts to navigate the challenges of maintaining her standing in the sport while overcoming health difficulties—a scenario familiar to many athletes aiming to re-establish themselves after significant interruptions.
