Arsenal express interest in Cristian Romero
Arsenal have reportedly made a shock enquiry over Tottenham captain Cristian Romero as Mikel Arteta considers defensive reinforcements, but Atletico Madrid remain favourites to sign the Argentina star, reports BritPanorama.
The Premier League champions have approached Romero’s representatives to discuss what it would take to secure the 28-year-old this summer.
According to the Daily Mail, however, Tottenham are believed to be unaware of Arsenal’s interest and have no intention of allowing their captain to make a sensational move across north London. Any prospect of Romero swapping Spurs for their bitter rivals would likely provoke fury among supporters and Tottenham would not contemplate sanctioning such a transfer.
Despite this, a departure from the club remains firmly on the cards. Atletico Madrid have revived their long-standing interest in the centre-back and currently appear to be leading the race despite competition from Inter Milan. The Italian giants have already agreed a £34 million fee with Tottenham for Romero but have so far been unable to reach an agreement with the player over personal terms.
Atletico, meanwhile, are attempting to raise funds through player sales before submitting their own formal proposal. The Spanish club is in discussions with Aston Villa over a £19.7 million deal for left-back Matteo Ruggeri, although the 24-year-old would still need to approve the move. Nahuel Molina is also being lined up for a switch to Roma.
Atletico hope these departures will provide the funds required to launch an offer worth around £30 million for Romero. Tottenham are prepared to allow their skipper to leave for the right price after Roberto De Zerbi strengthened his defensive options earlier in the transfer window.
