Tony Blair warns on energy policy amid climate targets

SIR Tony Blair has rebuked leaders for prioritising climate targets over securing affordable energy supplies, reports BritPanorama.

Blair stated that countries will not succeed merely by decarbonising quickly but by ensuring they can deliver “abundant, secure and affordable energy at scale.” His intervention is viewed as a direct challenge to all European governments, particularly targeting the UK government’s commitment to achieving 95 per cent clean power by 2030.

The Energy Secretary, Ed Miliband, has restricted new oil and gas drilling in the North Sea, despite calls for increased domestic energy production to counter high global prices. In a foreword to a report by his think tank, Blair warned that European leaders have treated energy policy primarily as a climate issue rather than one of national security.

He commented, “Europe has led the world in climate ambition and made real progress in reducing emissions. That achievement matters. But the global centre of gravity has shifted.” Blair emphasised that the future energy landscape will be shaped by nations experiencing rising demand, which necessitates a strong emphasis on maintaining consistent energy supply.

The report advocates for enhanced investment in electrification and nuclear energy while criticising the UK’s current trajectory of reducing its oil and gas capacity. It argues that the phase-out of fossil fuel production has left Europe exceptionally vulnerable to price fluctuations in international markets, particularly in a context of growing global instability.

Highlighted within the research, power prices in Europe are reportedly up to three times higher than those in the US and China, primarily due to the continent’s reliance on imported energy. Kemi Badenoch, the Tory leader, remarked that “sky-high energy bills and an aggressively anti-business approach from the Treasury and Energy Department make life unbearable for many energy-intensive industries,” adding that the UK lost a significant portion of its refining capacity last year.

The emphasis on energy security amidst climate ambitions raises fundamental questions about the balance European leaders must strike to ensure both sustainability and affordability in energy policy.

As the dialogue surrounding energy strategy continues to evolve, the need for pragmatic approaches becomes increasingly apparent, addressing the complex interplay between climate goals and national energy needs.
