Arsenal rise to top of Premier League after victory over Brighton as Liverpool hold off Wolves

On Boxing Day, football fans were furious. In a break from tradition there was just one fixture, with Manchester United beating Newcastle 1-0 at Old Trafford. However, 24 hours later, supporters across the nation have been treated, reports BritPanorama.

Following Manchester City’s 2-1 victory over Nottingham Forest earlier in the day, there were five matches at 3pm on Saturday. City had gone top following some late heroics from Rayan Cherki, who continues to impress following his arrival from Lyon back in the summer.

Arsenal, however, now sit atop the summit after a 2-1 victory over Brighton at the Emirates Stadium. They faced growing pressure due to City’s earlier success but controlled the game effectively. Martin Odegaard put the Gunners ahead in the 14th minute, and a subsequent own goal from Georginio Rutter ensured a solid win, despite Diego Gomez’s second-half strike narrowing the margin.

Meanwhile, Liverpool secured a 2-1 win over Wolves in a match marked by emotional scenes as Diogo Jota’s children served as mascots. Florian Wirtz contributed significantly for Liverpool, scoring one goal and assisting another, securing their victory despite a late response from Santiago Bueno.

In contrasting performances, Fulham edged out West Ham with a late goal from Raul Jimenez, while Brentford delivered a dominant 4-1 display against Bournemouth, with Kevin Schade netting a sensational hat-trick. Burnley and Everton, on the other hand, played out a stalemate, both teams unable to find the net and settling for a point.

These fixtures exemplify the competitive nature of the Premier League this season, where each team is battling for points in a tightly contested race. As teams continue to adjust and rebuild, the dynamics of the league are ever-changing, offering no shortage of drama and excitement.

On a day that saw fireworks and flops alike, the Premier League continues to remind us that the beautiful game always has surprises in store — a thrilling testament to the unpredictability that defines English football.
