Ukrainian Prime Minister resigns amid government reshuffle
Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko stepped down on Sunday as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced fresh changes to Ukraine’s government, reports BritPanorama.
In a statement on social media, Svyrydenko expressed pride in leading the government during one of the most challenging periods in Ukraine’s history. She indicated that she had discussed “next steps” with Zelenskyy, yet did not divulge specific details regarding her reasons for resigning.
“I remain ready to serve the Ukrainian state and carry out every task aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s position, defending our national interests and bringing a just peace closer,” she stated.
Svyrydenko, who previously served as Ukraine’s economy minister, was appointed prime minister in July 2025 at the age of 39. Her leadership had been marked by a significant mineral agreement between Ukraine and the U.S., designed to align U.S. interests with Ukraine’s security.
President Zelenskyy announced her resignation in a post proclaiming that Ukraine was “changing its political strategy.” He also presented Svyrydenko with the chance to take on “a new, important area” in relations with a key international partner.
“Each priority area of foreign policy will be assigned to a specific person with substantial experience who is capable of implementing what we agree on at the leaders’ level and what the Ukrainian people expect,” Zelenskyy elaborated, noting that changes would also occur within Ukraine’s law enforcement agencies.
Following the announcement, Zelenskyy convened with senior officials, including Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal and Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko. This reshuffle will be the fourth significant reorganization of his administration since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion.
Meanwhile, a Ukrainian attack in southwest Russia reportedly killed one individual and injured three more. Local officials stated that the strike targeted the Syzran Oil Refinery in the Samara region, which has faced repeated attacks from Ukrainian forces. Residential areas and other industrial sites were also damaged in the assault.
In a separate incident, the governor of Russia’s Rostov region reported that a tanker sustained damage in a drone attack within the Azov-Black Sea maritime canal, although it was confirmed that the vessel was empty and posed no risk of an oil spill.
Ukraine’s drone strikes targeting oil refineries and infrastructure have caused a widespread fuel crisis, leading to shortages and rationing across various regions of Russia. In response, Moscow has intensified attacks on Ukrainian cities, highlighting Ukraine’s vulnerabilities to ballistic missile strikes.
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy described the strikes on Russian energy infrastructure as part of a campaign of “long-range sanctions” in response to Russia’s continued aggression in the region.
Additionally, Russia’s Ministry of Defense claimed to have conducted attacks on the ports of Odesa and Chornomorsk in Ukraine’s Odesa region, though Ukrainian officials have yet to comment on these assertions.
