Shooting at Swiss rave leaves one dead and five injured
GENEVA — A shooting at a rave in the northern Swiss canton of Aargau left one person dead and five wounded early Sunday, local police and media reported, BritPanorama.
The shooting, described as a rare occurrence in Switzerland despite the country’s comparatively high rate of gun ownership, has prompted an extensive police investigation. “The search for the unknown perpetrator is ongoing,” police stated on X, adding that possible motives and the exact circumstances remain unclear.
Authorities confirmed that a 22-year-old woman succumbed to her injuries at the scene, while four men and another woman, aged between 24 and 27, were transported to nearby hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to severe. All victims are residents of Switzerland; their identities were withheld in compliance with local privacy laws.
Emergency services were alerted around 2:30 a.m. to the incident, which took place at the “Aarau Rave VOL. 7” event at a horse racing track in Aarau’s Schachen district, approximately 46 kilometers (29 miles) west of Zurich. A major police operation ensued, with officers, firefighters, and ambulances converging on the site, as local residents were advised to stay clear of the area.
Reports indicate that attendees initially mistook the gunfire for fireworks until prompted to “get down.” The shooting occurred shortly after the event concluded. Remaining guests were escorted to a nearby gym for safety. Police have called on witnesses with videos or photos to aid their investigation.
The Aargau Racing Club expressed its shock at the violence, extending condolences to those affected and acknowledging the professional efforts of emergency responders. “We would like to thank the emergency responders and all others involved who worked professionally and with dedication on the scene,” the Club said on its website.
Swiss DJ Tekibo, who performed at the rave, expressed his heartbreak on Instagram, stating that such incidents should not occur in spaces that are typically meant for freedom and safety.
Aarau has a population of approximately 22,300 and lies about 30 km (18 miles) south of the German border, an area now at the center of an unfolding investigation.
