The German government has attributed blame to Russia for an attempted attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport last month, which involved a drone loaded with explosives, and has announced measures including the closure of a Russian consulate, reports BritPanorama.
The drone was discovered near a Ukrainian aircraft on August 4 and was subsequently defused. German officials remarked that the incident indicated a new, elevated threat level.
Western officials have widely condemned Moscow for orchestrating a campaign of sabotage aimed at undermining support for Ukraine and destabilizing European nations.
Minister says evidence points to a familiar pattern
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated that the drone’s configuration, components, explosives, and detonator reflected characteristics associated with previous Russian hybrid operations and its conflict with Ukraine. He noted that the level of technical expertise involved suggested meticulous planning, although execution seemed to have relied on “low-level” operatives.
Dobrindt reported that intelligence indicated involvement by individuals acting on behalf of Russian state entities, although he did not specify which. “Taken together,” he said, “the police investigations, the pattern and intelligence findings prove a Russian responsibility for the attempted attack at Leipzig airport.”
Germany will shut a Russian consulate
Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul remarked that the attempted attack had been a deliberate decision by Russia to inflict additional damage on an already strained bilateral relationship. As a result, the Russian consulate in Bonn will be closed as of September 18, along with the termination of the contract for the Russian House cultural center in Berlin.
Wadephul also indicated that Germany would advocate for the inclusion of more individuals from Russia on European Union (E.U.) sanctions lists in connection with hybrid attacks, enhance entry controls for Russian nationals, and increase pressure on what he referred to as the “shadow fleet,” which involves tankers suspected of breaching international sanctions regarding Russian oil. The E.U. has already sanctioned hundreds of these vessels.
The Russian ambassador has been summoned to the Foreign Ministry in Berlin.
Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, stated that a “fitting response” would be forthcoming in light of the planned closures, as reported by Russian state news agency Tass. She dismissed claims of Russian involvement in the drone attack as “far-fetched and contrived pretexts” used by Berlin to heighten tensions, asserting that “as usual, no convincing or serious evidence has been presented whatsoever.”
Around 200 incidents blamed on Russia
Leipzig/Halle serves as a significant international freight hub and supports operations for Ukraine. Notably, it hosts Ukrainian Antonov transport aircraft.
The airport is also utilized by NATO’s Strategic Airlift International Solution, or SALIS, which regularly delivers equipment to NATO battle groups stationed along the eastern flank from Finland to Romania, in addition to supporting E.U. and allied missions.
Previously, in 2024, an incendiary device ignited at a logistics center at Leipzig/Halle Airport, igniting a freight container before it was due to be loaded onto a cargo plane. Western security officials suspect this incident was organized by Russian intelligence.
According to the Associated Press, around 200 instances of sabotage and malicious activity attributed to Russia have been reported across Europe since the onset of the Ukraine conflict, encompassing activities such as arson, orchestrating drone attacks, and attempts on the lives of adversaries abroad, alongside theft of defense technology and cyberattacks on vital European infrastructure.
In a May statement, Russian President Vladimir Putin responded to the AP’s findings, claiming that Russia is not engaged in a sabotage campaign against Europe and challenging the outlet to “name one proven fact.”
Russia has faced many packages of E.U. sanctions
The E.U. has imposed nearly two dozen sanction packages against Russia due to its actions in Ukraine, which have targeted around 3,000 individuals and entities.
E.U. foreign ministers are set to convene in Ireland on Wednesday. Ursula von der Leyen, the head of the E.U.’s executive commission, indicated on X that “hybrid attacks will not go without a clear response.”
Earlier this month, the German Cabinet approved a proposal to empower the country’s intelligence agencies with broader authority to counteract sabotage and hacking efforts. This planned reform, which has been in discussion for several months, still requires parliamentary approval.
Hours before the announcement from Germany, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, known for his warnings about Russian sabotage against NATO countries, reported that Poland has faced new acts of sabotage, including arson incidents in recent days.
His remarks followed a fire at WB Electronics, described by the Polish government as Europe’s largest drone manufacturer.
Prosecutors in Poland revealed that an investigation had been initiated, focusing on potential foreign intelligence activities against the Republic of Poland, without specifying which country might be responsible. The fire at the facility in Skarżysko-Kamienna resulted in significant damage estimated at 15 million zlotys (approximately $4 million).
