Wu Yize takes control in World Championship final
Wu Yize has established a commanding 10-7 lead over Shaun Murphy in the World Championship final at the Crucible, putting him on the cusp of making snooker history, reports BritPanorama.
The 22-year-old from China is poised to become the second-youngest player to claim the title at Sheffield’s renowned venue, trailing only Stephen Hendry, who was 21 when he won his first world title in 1990. Notably, Wu is three months younger than Murphy was during his lone world championship win in 2005.
If he secures victory on Monday, Wu would also follow in the footsteps of Zhao Xintong, making him the second consecutive Chinese champion. His determined performance on Sunday began where he left off in the afternoon session, which ended at 4-4.
Wu dominated the evening, posting breaks of 82 and 103 to surge ahead and then further extended his lead with contributions of 89 and 66, winning three of the next four frames. His long potting remained exceptionally effective throughout, and he concluded the night with a 91 clearance that followed a dramatic long red shot.
While Murphy, now 43, demonstrated resilience despite being frequently outplayed, he had earlier staged a comeback from a 3-0 deficit. A break of 72 provided a temporary reprieve, but Wu’s form proved too strong.
Murphy managed to recover one frame through an impressive plant but faces an uphill battle as he aims to close the gap and secure a second world title, potentially breaking the record for the longest interval between championships.
Off the table, the event was marked by some unusual occurrences; a female spectator leapt over a barrier during the afternoon session and was subsequently escorted away, while another patron was removed after a phone alarm interrupted play.

Reactions from snooker legends encapsulate the tension ahead of the final day. Seven-time world champion Stephen Hendry stated, “It’s harder [trailing overnight], but Shaun has that kind of game that can win bunches of frames in no time at all.” He urged Wu to remain grounded, warning against premature celebration. Fellow icon Steve Davis remarked on Wu’s advantageous position, whilst acknowledging the longer path ahead for both competitors.
As the championship nears its conclusion, the blend of youth and experience is on full display, highlighting how the sport’s dynamics can shift in an instant — a reminder of the thrill that defines snooker and the oft-unpredictable nature of competition.
