Wes Brown expresses disappointment for Harry Maguire’s World Cup exclusion
Former Manchester United defender Wes Brown has voiced his disappointment over Harry Maguire’s absence from the England squad for the World Cup, which started with England defeating Croatia 4-2 in their opening match, reports BritPanorama.

In an exclusive interview, he stated, “I was gutted for Harry Maguire. With the size of squads available for these tournaments, I felt he’d done enough this season to be in contention.” Brown acknowledged Maguire’s resilience amid criticism over the years, asserting that he has demonstrated significant character and has played an essential role in United’s solid season thus far.
Addressing the broader context of squad selection, Brown commented, “I completely understand his disappointment. Any player who misses out on a World Cup squad is going to feel hurt.” He also referenced similar omissions of talents like Phil Foden and Cole Palmer, emphasising that such choices are ultimately part of the manager’s responsibility to assemble the most competitive team.
Shifting focus to England’s performance against Croatia, Brown highlighted the team’s impressive second-half display, anchored by goals from Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford, alongside two from Harry Kane. “When I look at England’s squad, we’ve probably had stronger groups on paper in the past, but tournament football is about finding the right balance and functioning as a team,” he noted.
Reflecting on England’s previous tournament history, wherein the team reached a quarter-final, a semi-final, and a final in recent major competitions, Brown reiterated his belief in the team’s potential. “After watching that second-half performance, I genuinely believe England can go all the way. If they continue to improve as the tournament progresses, they’ll give themselves a great chance of going all the way,” he concluded.
