Two horse riders killed in separate incidents during cross-country events
Two horse riders have been killed within hours of each other in separate cross-country events, reports BritPanorama.
British Eventing confirmed the deaths of riders Sophie Fouracre and Kerry Donoghue, which occurred during events on Saturday. Both incidents unfolded during the cross-country phase, a discipline known for its demanding courses that combine speed and technical skill.
In light of the tragedies, British Eventing has stated that thorough reviews of the circumstances surrounding the accidents will take place. Following the events, both horses involved were examined by veterinarians and found to be uninjured.
Rosie Williams, chief executive of British Eventing, expressed the community’s grief, stating, “The British Eventing community is heartbroken. On behalf of everyone at British Eventing, I want to extend our deepest condolences to Kerry and Sophie’s families, friends and loved ones at this devastating time.” Williams further acknowledged the support provided by event officials and medical teams, recognizing their professionalism and care in handling such difficult situations.
Despite the infrequency of rider fatalities in eventing, such incidents underscore the risks inherent in the sport. This year has already seen its share of tragic accidents, adding weight to the debate around safety measures. Previously, professional eventer Georgie Campbell lost her life following a fall in 2023, and another incident in August 2025 claimed Sarah York during the cross-country segment.
