Two men die at the Great North Run
Two 25-year-old men have died while taking part in the Great North Run, race organisers announced, reports BritPanorama.
The two men, both from the North East, collapsed during the event while competing on the 13.1-mile route. Despite the “best efforts” of the medical teams, they were unable to be revived.
In a statement, the Great Run Company expressed condolences to the families and friends of the deceased participants. “Everyone involved in organising the Great North Run extends their heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the two participants,” the organisers said.
They further indicated that they are continuing to support their families during this incredibly difficult time, and their thoughts are with those who knew the men. The cause of death has yet to be confirmed, and organisers stated they would not release further details out of respect for the men’s families.
Some 63,000 runners participated in this year’s event, which marks its 45th year. Among them was Andy Burnham, who made a notable appearance as the first sitting Prime Minister to run in the Great North Run. Burnham, who had previously participated in 2021, 2023, and 2024, registered for this year’s race while still serving as the Mayor of Greater Manchester.
Before the race, Burnham told the BBC that his new role would not change who he was. “People said to me when I became Prime Minister: ‘Don’t change,'” he remarked. “I’ve been doing the Great North Run for a few years, so I thought: ‘Well, I’ll live that now. I won’t change. I’ll come and do it again.’”
During the event, Burnham aimed to highlight the North East, noting that it “doesn’t always get the attention it deserves.” He welcomed the national spotlight on “this wonderful part of the world.” Running for the homelessness charity Changing Lives, he also committed to donating 15% of his first month’s salary as Prime Minister to the organisation.
Stephen Bell, chief executive of Changing Lives, appreciated Burnham’s involvement, stating that when Burnham visited the charity’s service in Newcastle, he directly heard from individuals about their experiences of homelessness and how they had received support. “A safe place to stay is the start,” Bell noted, emphasizing the importance of trust and ongoing assistance in rebuilding lives.
The tragic events at the Great North Run serve as a stark reminder of the risks associated with endurance events and the vital role of emergency medical services on such occasions.
