Turkey and Haiti eliminated from the World Cup

Turkey and Haiti have been eliminated from the World Cup following FIFA’s new rule change for how the group stages work, reports BritPanorama.

The recent modification prioritises head-to-head records over goal difference when teams finish level on points, fundamentally altering how group-stage outcomes are determined. For Turkey, this new regulation means their losses to Australia and Paraguay have sealed their fate, placing them at the bottom of Group D regardless of the outcome of their final match against co-hosts USA.

Similarly, Haiti’s two defeats, including a 4-0 loss to Brazil, confirm their position at the bottom of Group C, irrespective of their impending encounter with Morocco. Turkey recorded a 1-0 defeat to Paraguay and had previously lost 2-0 to Australia. Over the course of their two group-stage matches, coach Vincenzo Montella’s side racked up an impressive 62 shots, with 32 attempts against Paraguay alone.

Expectations had been quite high for Turkey prior to the tournament, with many viewing them as dark horses capable of advancing through the group stages. Montella expressed disappointment in the aftermath of their elimination but refrained from placing blame on his players. “I’m sad, but also very proud of my players. They gave their all until the final whistle. Football is like that sometimes,” he remarked.

He added, “There were high expectations on behalf of our nation. Our expectations were also high. I also feel very sorry on behalf of the TFF [Turkish Football Federation]; I know how they worked. I know how the footballers worked.” Montella further lamented the unluckiness they faced, mentioning, “There are 62 shots in two matches! Not to mention ball possession. Fate was not on our side.”

Turkey will face the United States in their final World Cup fixture, scheduled for Friday morning at 3am, while Haiti’s last match will take place the same day at 11pm against Morocco. This marks a harsh reality for both sides in a tournament that promised much yet delivered disappointment on the grand stage.
