Troy Deeney criticizes England players after World Cup win over Panama

Troy Deeney launched a blistering attack on three England players following their World Cup victory over Panama, accusing Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford, and Noni Madueke of being “ignorant and arrogant” despite the Three Lions finishing top of their group, reports BritPanorama.

England secured a 2-0 win against Panama, completing the group stage unbeaten. Jude Bellingham broke the deadlock before assisting Harry Kane, who scored his record-breaking World Cup goal.

Despite the victory, Deeney expressed dissatisfaction with England’s performance during CBS Sports’ post-match analysis in the United States. He criticized the team’s wide players for frequently losing possession and underestimating their opponents.

“Have a look at the possession they have lost: 14 for Saka, 20 for Rashford, and seven for Madueke,” Deeney said. He emphasized the need for more insightful decision-making, adding that Madueke’s early attempt resulted in a goal kick and that Rashford often succumbed to predictable shooting attempts.

Deeney acknowledged some improvement in the second half as Panama left more space, but he maintained that the front three’s decision-making remained poor. “They felt ‘I’m quicker than that person, I am just going to run past them, I play for whatever club, I am better than that person,'” he remarked, characterizing their attitude as a blend of arrogance and ignorance.

The criticism did not stop there. Deeney argued that fans were promised a more entertaining style of play under coach Thomas Tuchel, yet the team’s inability to control matches persisted, despite featuring some of the world’s most expensive players.

Former Leeds and Brentford winger Mike Grella echoed Deeney’s sentiments, questioning whether England’s reputation had grown disproportionate to their on-field performances. “Maybe it is Tuchel, maybe it is Rashford, maybe it is this guy – ‘Do you guys ever think you’re not that good at football?'” Grella said, highlighting the pressure on England at the World Cup.

England’s next challenge comes against DR Congo on Wednesday in the round of 32, with the African side recently securing their place by defeating Uzbekistan 3-1, featuring a brace from Newcastle striker Yoane Wissa.

As the tournament progresses, the challenge remains for England to translate their individual talent into cohesive team performance—something that has eluded them amid lofty expectations.
