Near miss during Formula 2 race in Monaco
A dramatic moment unfolded during Sunday’s Formula 2 race in Monaco when a track worker narrowly avoided being struck by an oncoming car after running across the circuit, reports BritPanorama.
The alarming incident occurred in the closing stages of the Feature Race and was caught live on television, leaving viewers stunned as the individual dashed across a section of the track with cars still circulating at speed.
As drivers approached the pit lane entry, a member of event personnel sprinted across the circuit directly in front of approaching traffic. American driver Colton Herta was the nearest car and came dangerously close to colliding with the individual.
Footage showed the worker making it safely to the other side just moments before Herta arrived at the same section of track. Nicolas Varrone and Joshua Durksen were also immediately behind, further underlining how serious the situation could have become. Fortunately, no contact was made and the individual escaped unharmed.
The race continued without interruption, although the incident quickly became one of the major talking points from an eventful afternoon in Monaco. Herta, Varrone, and Durksen all headed into the pit lane shortly after the near miss. None of the trio featured in the fight for points, with Durksen eventually finishing 15th.
Much of the post-race discussion centred on the frightening safety scare involving the track worker. The incident immediately drew comparisons with another near miss involving circuit personnel during a Formula One race last season. At the Mexico City Grand Prix, Racing Bulls driver Liam Lawson was left furious after nearly encountering two stewards who were still on track while his car was returning to the circuit.
The New Zealander had just exited the pit lane after repairs when he spotted the marshals collecting debris near the racing line, forcing him to react quickly to avoid a potentially catastrophic collision. The incident left the driver visibly shaken and prompted an angry response over team radio, where he exclaimed, “The f***? Oh my god, are you kidding me? Did you just see that? Oh my god, dude. I could have f***ing killed them.”
This latest episode serves as a stark reminder of the dangers inherent within motorsport. With tensions heightened in such a demanding environment, it’s clear that circuit safety must remain a top priority to prevent any near misses from escalating into tragedy.
