Tuchel blames English football’s DNA for World Cup defeat

Thomas Tuchel has attributed England’s World Cup defeat to Argentina to the nation’s “DNA,” suggesting a deep-rooted issue within the framework of English football, reports BritPanorama.

The German manager, who has confirmed his commitment to continue as England’s head coach, faced significant backlash following a conservative tactical approach after England initially took the lead. The strategy backfired as England conceded two late goals, resulting in a 2-1 loss.

Rather than reflecting on tactical failures, Tuchel pointed to the ingrained characteristics of English football that he believes limit his players’ ability to handle high-pressure situations. He stated, “In this moment, my feeling was no structure in the world could have helped us,” further elaborating on a lack of aggression and physicality in the team’s performance.

Tuchel noted an apparent shift in momentum after England’s goal, indicating that the team’s ball possession significantly dropped. He remarked, “We couldn’t find any duels anymore; that’s why we dropped deeper and deeper. It was never the plan, but it happened.”

Under scrutiny for his decision to implement a back five, Tuchel defended this move, positing it was designed to counter the Argentinian threat. He remarked, “[We] couldn’t stop the runners from the second line, the midfielders, through our gaps, and the deliveries were on the highest level.”

He elaborated on the tactical nuances, saying, “You need to get back on the ball; otherwise, you cannot break the pressure, and you cannot get the momentum back.” He acknowledged the stark contrast between England’s playing style and those of historically dominant football nations like Spain and Brazil, stating, “It’s maybe not in our DNA to take the ball and control the game.”

Tuchel asserted that the team’s struggles were not solely tactical but included physical challenges over the tournament duration, citing fatigue from playing in challenging conditions. “We struggled a bit physically as well… It cost us in the end a lot,” he explained.

Despite the disappointment, Tuchel remains motivated, stating his intention to lead England into the 2028 European Championship, expressing confidence in the potential of his players to refine their style. “I still think we can impose ourselves more on the ball… there’s still enough to improve,” he concluded.

As England looks to regroup for the next challenge, the debate around the nation’s footballing identity will continue to simmer, revealing the complexities that underpin a sport fraught with expectation.
