Canada’s emphatic World Cup victory marred by Ismael Kone’s injury
Canada’s emphatic 6-0 victory over Qatar at the World Cup was overshadowed by a sickening injury to former Watford midfielder Ismael Kone that left players distraught, sparked ugly scenes on the touchline and prompted ITV to refuse to show replays, reports BritPanorama.
The 24-year-old was carried from the field on a stretcher after suffering a serious leg injury following a reckless challenge from Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo during the Group B encounter in Vancouver.
Players from both sides immediately signalled for medical assistance, with several visibly distressed as they grasped the severity of the incident. ITV’s coverage quickly cut away from the challenge and declined to broadcast any replay footage, while co-commentator Andros Townsend admitted he was struggling to process what he had witnessed.
“I’m lost for words, to be honest,” said the former England winger. Madibo was shown a straight red card for the challenge and was seen leaving the pitch in tears as furious Canada players confronted members of the Qatar bench. Tempers flared on the sidelines, with staff from both teams becoming involved in a heated exchange before further scuffles erupted following the final whistle.
Kone, who acknowledged supporters as he was taken from the field, was stabilised inside the dressing room before being transported to hospital for further examinations. Reports later suggested the midfielder had suffered fractures to both his tibia and fibula and was awaiting surgery, supported by his mother Suzanne.
The injury is set to end Kone’s World Cup campaign and is a major setback for Canada ahead of their final group stage fixture against Switzerland. Canada manager Jesse Marsch revealed he immediately feared the worst when the tackle was made. “I could hear the bone snap,” he admitted afterwards.
Despite the emotional blow, Canada produced a memorable performance, recording the country’s first-ever World Cup victory. Cyle Larin opened the scoring before Jonathan David struck twice to put Marsch’s side firmly in control. Qatar’s problems worsened when Homam El Amin was dismissed, leaving the visitors with 10 men even before Madibo’s sending off reduced them to nine.
Substitute Nathan Saliba paid tribute to his injured teammate by lifting Kone’s shirt into the air after curling home a superb free-kick. Mohammad Manai then compounded Qatar’s misery by diverting Jacob Shaffelburg’s effort into his own net, before David completed his hat-trick deep into stoppage time to cap a dominant display.
In a touching gesture after the match, Madibo reportedly visited the Canada dressing room to apologise personally to Kone for the challenge that marred an otherwise historic night for the tournament co-hosts.
