Serbian pundit faces backlash for racist comments about black players during World Cup coverage

Controversy erupts over Serbian pundit’s discriminatory remarks during World Cup

Serbian television pundit Rade Bogdanovic sparked widespread outrage for making discriminatory remarks during live coverage of the World Cup on Sunday evening, reports BritPanorama.

The 56-year-old former Yugoslavia striker, who works for state broadcaster RTS, directed his comments towards Belgium defender Nathan Ngoy after the player’s dismissal during a goalless draw against Iran. Bogdanovic claimed that black footballers cannot maintain concentration for long periods, a statement that ignited fierce condemnation from various quarters.

The incident unfolded during Belgium’s Group G match in Los Angeles, where Ngoy received a red card in the 66th minute for a last-man challenge, further complicating a challenging afternoon for the Belgian team. Bogdanovic’s remarks were particularly troubling in the context of Ngoy’s young career, as he has only recently become a regular player for the national team.

Commenting on Ngoy’s sending-off, Bogdanovic declared: “At this level, to be the last defender, to miss a ball that is standing still and then get sent off… I’ve always said these players, and I’m not racist, but black players don’t have the concentration to last more than 60 to 80 minutes.” He attempted to justify his controversial stance by referencing his own experiences as a player, stating, “I played with them.”

Bogdanovic added, “Sometimes we had to protect our own players from making mistakes. Modern football doesn’t allow this kind of error at World Cup level.” When pressed by the presenter about his comments, he refused to retract them: “If we wanted to go into details, we could. They make mistakes too. Of course I’m not generalising, but the majority lack concentration and then situations like this happen,” he insisted.

The fallout from Bogdanovic’s comments reverberates through Belgium’s World Cup campaign, now in jeopardy following two consecutive draws against Egypt and Iran. Currently sitting third in Group G with just two points, Belgium is under pressure to secure victory in its next match, facing the stark possibility of first-round elimination.

Ngoy, visibly affected by his red card and its impact on the team’s prospects, has now played only six matches for the national squad. His dismissal marked a significant moment in a match that was already proving difficult for a team with high expectations.

In the wake of Bogdanovic’s remarks, which have been widely denounced as racist and unacceptable, the incident highlights ongoing issues of discrimination in sports media. It follows other controversies at the 2026 tournament, including a presenter’s suspension related to inappropriate comments.

In a notable contradiction, while Bogdanovic criticized Ngoy, he praised Iran’s performance, stating, “Iran is already a winner, the age of the team, the experience, the conditions under which they play.” Meanwhile, Egypt’s victory over New Zealand positioned them at the top of Group G, with Mohamed Salah contributing a crucial goal in what marked the nation’s first-ever World Cup win.

This latest controversy brings into focus the pressing need for accountability in sports commentary, reminding us that the blend of sport and societal issues remains a delicate balance, one that athletes and pundits alike must navigate with care.
