Scottish sides postpone fixtures for European ambitions
Scottish clubs Celtic, Rangers, Hearts, Motherwell, and Hibernian have opted to postpone their Scottish Premiership fixtures scheduled for Saturday, August 22, in an effort to enhance their prospects of qualifying for European competitions, reports BritPanorama.
This decision comes in light of a regulation introduced in April 2025, which allows clubs participating in European tournaments to delay domestic matches without needing their opponents’ consent, a shift from previous requirements for mutual agreement.
Celtic, having secured the Premiership title this season, is already guaranteed a place in the Champions League play-offs, though their opponent is yet to be determined. Last year, Celtic was eliminated at this stage by Kairat Almaty, a team from Kazakhstan.
Rangers are also assured of a position in a European play-off, with confirmation of their pairing against Polish side Jagiellonia Bialystok in the Europa League’s third qualifying round.
Hearts, however, face a daunting challenge, trailing 4-0 on aggregate against Austrian club Sturm Graz in the Champions League second qualifying round. They would need to overturn this deficit to avoid dropping into the Europa League qualifying rounds.
Meanwhile, Motherwell and Hibernian are both active in the Conference League’s second qualifying rounds. Motherwell holds a 2-0 aggregate lead over Faroe Islands’ HB, while Hibernian must recover from a 2-0 loss to Kosovan side Malisheva.
Should either club progress to the play-off rounds, their respective Premiership matches on August 22 will also be postponed under the same provision adopted by Celtic, Rangers, and Hearts. Currently, Celtic’s fixture at St Johnstone and Rangers’ home match against St Mirren have already been shelved.
Falkirk’s match against Hearts, Hibernian’s encounter with Kilmarnock, and Motherwell’s clash with Aberdeen remain contingent upon those clubs reaching their playoff stages. In contrast, the Dundee derby will proceed as scheduled, with Dundee United hosting their city rivals on the original date.
Postponed matches will be rescheduled for midweek dates, ensuring that the clubs remain competitive both domestically and in Europe.
