He expressed that stricter policing could be beneficial but acknowledged the challenges of officiating given that players like DeChambeau are heavily scrutinized with live television coverage. “When you have camera angles that are far away, things can look different than they do when you’re right there,” he noted.
Despite advocating for tighter regulations, Scheffler stood firm that DeChambeau’s character should not be questioned. “All I’ll say is Bryson, I’ve known him for a long time, and he’s a lot of things, but he’s definitely not a cheater,” Scheffler stated, reflecting on their long-standing friendship.
He observed that television replays might create misleading impressions and suggested that DeChambeau’s actions could be attributed to carelessness rather than a deliberate attempt to gain an advantage. “When you’re watching him there from that camera angle, maybe he was a touch careless around his ball, but I don’t think he did anything intentionally,” he added.
