Sabastian Sawe breaks the two-hour barrier in London Marathon

Kenyans dominated the London Marathon as Sabastian Sawe became the first athlete to break the two-hour barrier in an official competition, winning with a world record time of 1:59:30, reports BritPanorama.

Following his historic achievement, Sawe is expected to earn over $1 million (£741,000) in contractual bonuses. He crossed the finish line wearing Adidas Adizero Adios Pro Evo Three shoes, with his record time displayed on the side, highlighting both his victory and the innovation in sports technology.

In a post-race interview, Sawe expressed his satisfaction with the result, stating, “I think I’ve made history today in London, and for the new generation (it shows) to run a record is possible.” He underscored the importance of preparation and discipline, saying, “It depends on the preparation you had and the discipline you had… I was ready today. I was well-prepared for the London Marathon.” His excitement was palpable as he remarked on the courage needed to maintain pace throughout the race.

Sawe’s achievement coincided with Tigst Assefa also breaking the women’s world record, finishing in 2:15:41. Assefa reflected on her performance, saying, “I’ve been working on my speed, and today I showed how fast I could finish.” This dual success at the London Marathon has raised questions about its significance in sports history.

London Marathon Events CEO Hugh Brasher stated, “It is, without doubt, the greatest day in London Marathon history,” while others compared Sawe’s achievement to the historic mile run by Sir Roger Bannister in 1954. Eliud Kipchoge, the previous record holder, praised Sawe and celebrated this “historical day for marathon running,” recognizing the monumental nature of this event in athletics.

The achievements in the marathon not only reflect the evolving standards in endurance sports but also inspire future generations of athletes, illustrating how perseverance and innovation can merge to create groundbreaking moments in competition.
