Ruud van Nistelrooy joins Netherlands coaching staff ahead of World Cup
Ruud van Nistelrooy will take up a position on Ronald Koeman’s coaching staff with the Netherlands national team in preparation for this summer’s World Cup, reports BritPanorama.
The 49-year-old former striker, who netted 150 goals across 219 matches during his playing days at Manchester United, had been considered for the permanent managerial role at Old Trafford following Ruben Amorim’s departure. However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick swiftly became the leading candidates for the position, with Carrick ultimately securing the appointment.
Van Nistelrooy, who has been without a club since leaving Leicester City, will commence his new role on February 1. His most recent managerial stint ended in disappointment after he was sacked by Leicester City following their drop to the Championship during the 2024-25 season.
Upon his appointment, Van Nistelrooy said: “Returning to the national team in this role is a big honour and a wonderful challenge for me. The fact that this is happening in preparation for a World Cup makes it even more special. I look forward to contributing to a successful tournament.”
Van Nistelrooy took charge at the King Power Stadium midway through the campaign, succeeding Steve Cooper in the dugout. His tenure with the Foxes proved deeply challenging, with the former Netherlands international managing just five victories from 27 matches while suffering 19 defeats.
Despite this difficult spell in the East Midlands, the ex-Real Madrid forward continues to command respect within coaching circles. Following Erik ten Hag’s dismissal in October 2024, Van Nistelrooy stepped into the interim role at Old Trafford and delivered impressive results, securing three wins and a 1-1 draw against Chelsea in four games.
Nevertheless, Amorim opted not to retain him as part of his backroom staff. United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, was already familiar with Van Nistelrooy from that interim period, reportedly leading to a lack of a face-to-face interview during the recent managerial search.
The appointment reunites Van Nistelrooy with Koeman, the pair having previously collaborated at PSV Eindhoven, where the striker first embarked on his coaching journey. Expressing his enthusiasm for the appointment, Koeman said: “With Ruud’s unique style and vision of football, he can truly add value to our coaching staff. He is familiar with football at the highest level and brings valuable experience, both as a player and a coach.”
Nigel de Jong, the former Manchester City midfielder who serves as the Oranje’s technical director, also welcomed the addition. De Jong stated: “With Ruud, we’re expanding our already high-quality staff. By adding him now he can fully participate in the preparation, including the international window in March.” Van Nistelrooy scored 35 goals in 70 appearances for his country during his playing career.
As the Netherlands gears up for the World Cup, the integration of Van Nistelrooy’s experience could prove vital in navigating the complexities of international competition, highlighting the intertwining paths of past glory and present challenges on the footballing stage.
