Ruben Amorim appointed as AC Milan manager
Former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has been appointed as the new manager of Italian giants AC Milan, reports BritPanorama.
The Portuguese signed a two-year deal to replace Massimiliano Allegri, who was sacked after failing to qualify for the Champions League. Milan stated that the 41-year-old brings a “modern dominant tactical approach,” with the club’s owner, Gerry Cadinale, adding that “Amorim is one of the most prepared and innovative coaches.”
Cadinale highlighted that Amorim believes in an offensive, high-intensity style of football that aligns with Milan’s vision. Upon signing his new deal, Amorim expressed that coaching AC Milan has always been an ambition throughout his career. He recognizes the club’s history, prestige, and extraordinary global fanbase, a challenge he embraces “with pride and enthusiasm.”
Amorim’s exit from Manchester United, along with his coaching staff, could have cost the club around £15.9 million. It remains unclear whether United will need to pay the remainder of this sum, with Italian reports suggesting that Amorim may waive the year’s salary he was owed by the club. His tenure at Old Trafford lasted a tumultuous 14 months.
Prior to his time with United, Amorim achieved notable success at Sporting Lisbon, leading the team to a long-awaited league title in both the 2020-21 and 2023-24 seasons. He took over United from Erik Ten Hag in November 2024 but left the side sitting sixth in the Premier League. United’s decision to part ways with Amorim was aimed at maximizing their chances for a higher league finish.
Michael Carrick subsequently took the reins, guiding the team to Champions League qualification with a third-place finish. Following Amorim’s sacking, it was initially suggested that he might return to former club Benfica, but Marco Silva has since been appointed instead.
Amorim’s first match in charge will be a pre-season encounter against Celtic on July 25, with his final pre-season fixture against Manchester United set for August 15 in Wroclaw, Poland. As the new season approaches, the footballing world will be watching closely to see how Amorim adapts to his new role and whether he can bring Milan back to its former glory.
