Rory McIlroy to miss multiple tournaments as he continues selective playing schedule

Rory McIlroy admitted he will miss multiple tournaments, as the golfing star said he will continue to “pick and choose” when he plays, reports BritPanorama.

The six-time major winner has been selective with tournaments since winning his first Masters, having adopted this strategy over the past two years.

McIlroy stated: “I’ve been doing this a long time. I’ve been on tour more than half of my life at this point. So I’ll pick and choose my spots like I have been doing sort of the last 18 months to two years.”

Despite the potential impact on his chances for the FedEx Cup or other season-long titles, he expressed satisfaction with his approach, emphasizing the importance of balance in his life outside the game.

Returning to action this week at the Memorial Tournament, McIlroy highlighted it as one of two tournaments he is eager to win, alongside the Tiger Woods-fronted Genesis Invitational. He remarked, “I would say here and Tiger’s event at Riviera, they’re the two that I would love to win.”

Looking ahead to the US Open, McIlroy shared his thoughts on the conditions at Shinnecock Hills on Long Island, expressing concerns over the speed of the greens. He noted that the fairways were broader compared to 2018, adding, “The fairways are very generous…the greens are rolling around 11, 11.2 (anything over 12 is considered fast).” He called for the greens to be maintained at their current speed to ensure a competitive and enjoyable tournament.

The world No. 2 is only participating in his sixth regular PGA Tour event of the year, indicative of his continued commitment to a more measured playing schedule.

As golf continues to evolve, McIlroy’s approach reminds us how the balance between personal life and professional obligation can shape a player’s career — a reflection of how sport balances ambition with personal fulfillment.
