Rory McIlroy endures difficult opening round at PGA Championship

Rory McIlroy faced a challenging start at the PGA Championship, finishing his opening round with four consecutive bogeys and a score of four-over-par, putting him in danger of missing the cut, reports BritPanorama.

His frustrating performance saw him rank among a small group of players who struggled on the course, including LIV Golf competitor Bryson DeChambeau, who ended with a six-over-par score. With less than two dozen players recording worse scores, McIlroy’s position is precarious.

Expressing his discontent during the press conference, McIlroy described his round in blunt terms, simply stating, “S***.” He elaborated on his difficulties, admitting, “I’m just not driving the ball well enough. It’s been a problem all year for the most part.”

The Northern Irishman struggles with inconsistency in his shots, explaining, “I miss it right, and then I want to try to correct it. And then I’ll overdo it and I’ll miss it left.” On being questioned about the impact of a toe injury, he firmly replied, “No.”

Playing alongside Jordan Spieth and Jon Rahm, who both managed to card one-under-par scores, McIlroy noted that he felt trapped by tricky angles, especially after missing fairways. He acknowledged the high penalty for such mistakes, highlighting his earlier optimism about the course setup.

DeChambeau, who did not speak to reporters following his round, also suffered on the course, missing seven greens and taking 33 putts to complete his round, which did not yield a birdie until the ninth hole.

Additionally, McIlroy found himself in an awkward exchange with fans, urging them to refrain from noise during his swings. As he prepares for the second round, McIlroy aims to regain his form and bridge the gap with Spieth and Rahm, reminding observers of the consuming pressure that accompanies top-level golf.

In the end, even the Masters champion is not immune to the fickle nature of the game, a stark reminder of golf’s ability to humble even the best with a single round.
