Rory McIlroy frustrated with greens after poor first round at The Open
Rory McIlroy expressed frustration with the greens at Royal Birkdale following a disappointing first round at The Open, where he carded a two-over-par 72. The round included six bogeys and four birdies, leaving him with significant work to do to avoid missing the cut, reports BritPanorama.
Despite his major-winning experience, the Northern Irishman missed three four-foot putts within just four holes, indicating difficulties in adjusting to the speed and consistency of the putting surface.
Reflecting on his performance, McIlroy noted the inconsistencies of the greens, saying, “The two bogeys on the par-fives weren’t great, and I struggled the first two holes to get the speed of the green.” He further added, “I felt like they were very inconsistent, just because some parts of the greens are still alive and growing, and other parts are really dead.”
McIlroy concluded with optimism, stating, “I’m not too far away. Hopefully we’ll get the better conditions [on Friday], and maybe the greens are a little bit smoother in the morning.” He starts day two seven shots behind leader Jackson Suber.
The former Open champion is grouped with fellow Briton Matt Fitzpatrick and American Xander Schauffele for the second round. Forecasts suggest a potential shift in scoring conditions, as McIlroy observed, “If you look at the discrepancy between the scoring this morning and the scoring this afternoon, it looks like that’s going to be flipped tomorrow with the conditions.” He aims to capitalize on the expected better weather.
As he seeks to regain form, McIlroy faces a critical test in his quest for a second major of the year. With prominent players like Jordan Spieth, Justin Rose, and Jason Day also hovering near the cut line, the competition remains fierce as the tournament progresses.
In golf, as in life, sometimes the smallest missteps can lead to bigger hurdles, and for McIlroy, patience and resilience will be key as he navigates the challenges ahead.
