Richard Keys bids farewell as he concludes Premier League coverage
Richard Keys has shared an emotional farewell message ahead of his final season of covering Premier League football for beIN Sports, reports BritPanorama.
The veteran presenter took to social media before Sunday’s final round of Premier League fixtures to reflect on a noteworthy broadcasting career that has spanned over three decades. Keys, who has long collaborated with fellow presenter Andy Gray, expressed nostalgia through a message accompanied by a nostalgic image from the early stages of his television journey.
“It’s the end of an era,” Keys wrote. “Not Spurs or W Ham. K&G host PL football for the last time today. 1992-2026.” He added, “What a ride – 34 years, countless games & goals. We’ve seen them all.” At 69 years old, Keys has resided in Doha over the past 13 years, leading football coverage for beIN Sports across the Middle East and North Africa.
Earlier this year, reports indicated that both Keys and Gray had been informed their contracts would not be renewed beyond the current campaign. Gray, 70, is also expected to return to the UK after spending over a decade in Qatar, rebuilding their careers following their controversial exits from Sky Sports in 2011. The duo’s departure from Sky Sports was precipitated by off-air comments about assistant referee Sian Massey-Ellis that were leaked.
Despite the scandal, Keys and Gray have remained prominent figures in football broadcasting, covering Premier League and UEFA Champions League matches in 24 countries through their work with beIN Sports. They also featured prominently in the network’s coverage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
A spokesperson for Keys had previously confirmed that the decision to part ways with beIN Sports had been made months ago. “Richard decided some months ago that, after 13 great years, the time had come to leave beIN with Andy,” the spokesperson remarked.
Away from his professional life, Keys has made headlines over his personal affairs. Following the emergence of his relationship with Lucie Rose in 2016, he split from his wife Julia after 36 years of marriage. Keys and Rose subsequently married in a private ceremony in Devon in 2023 and are expected to relocate permanently to the UK post his departure from Qatar.
As the sun sets on an esteemed career that has shaped football broadcasting, Richard Keys leaves behind a legacy marked by significant highs and the occasional controversy. It’s an end of an era, but perhaps also a beginning for a new chapter in the world of football commentary, reminding fans just how integral personalities are in the beautiful game.
