Ricardo Pietreczko withdraws from Players Championship mid-match

Ricardo Pietreczko has withdrawn from his opening-round Players Championship clash against Jeffrey de Zwaan, conceding a walkover after just two legs, reports BritPanorama.

The German number two was only averaging below 60 points at the time of his exit, indicating significant struggles throughout the match.

No official explanation has been provided for this abrupt departure, but German commentator Fabian Dippold suggested that dartitis could be a likely factor. This psychological condition affects players’ ability to effectively release the dart.

Pietreczko’s difficulties had been evident prior to this match, having lost 6-4 to fellow German Kai Gotthardt one day earlier, with a disappointing average of 80.46 points. Reports indicated that he has been grappling with issues related to his throwing action since the European Tour event in Munich. In response, he has experimented with adjusting both his grip and release technique.

His last match abandonment occurred in 2024, where wrist pain prevented him from continuing. The timing of his recent struggles raises concerns ahead of the upcoming World Cup of Darts, in which he is set to represent Germany alongside Martin Schindler in six weeks.

Pietreczko gained significant attention following a heated encounter with Luke Littler at the 2024 Belgian Darts Open semi-final, where he was narrowly defeated 7-3. After that match, an aggressive exchange nearly resulted in a confrontation between the two players.

Following the incident, Pietreczko publicly criticized Littler on social media. The two have competed against each other on two occasions, with Littler emerging victorious in both matches. Meanwhile, Littler has recently revealed adjustments to his Instagram privacy settings to shield himself from online negativity, having seen a dramatic rise in followers since he burst onto the scene at the PDC World Darts Championship in December 2023.

His online popularity has skyrocketed from around 4,000 Instagram followers to over two million, reflecting his status as a rising star in the sport. As the darts community looks ahead, Pietreczko’s upcoming challenges will be closely monitored; it serves as a reminder of the pressures athletes face both on and off the stage. The world of darts continues to blend skill with the psychological demands of performance.
