Mauricio Pochettino offered contract extension ahead of World Cup knockout clash

Mauricio Pochettino has reportedly been offered a lucrative contract extension as the United States prepare for a crucial World Cup knockout clash against Bosnia and Herzegovina, reports BritPanorama.

The Americans will face the European side in Santa Clara on Wednesday, with a spot in the last 16 at stake. Discussions surrounding Pochettino’s long-term future are already active behind the scenes, even as the tournament progresses.

Appointed in September 2024 on a contract set to last until the end of this summer’s tournament, Pochettino is now the focus of US Soccer’s ambitions. The governing body seeks to extend his tenure for another four years, a proposal that would see him remain at the helm until the 2030 World Cup.

A successful agreement could also enable Pochettino to manage the US Men’s National Team at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Additionally, the United States is in discussions to potentially host the Copa America again, should plans materialize. Initial offers for an extension were made prior to the World Cup, but final decisions are expected to be postponed until after the tournament concludes.

While some doubt remains regarding Pochettino’s potential return to club management, US Soccer appears keen to solidify his leadership. His future seemed uncertain following the departure of technical director Matt Crocker in April, a former colleague at Southampton, which led to speculation about Pochettino’s own career considerations.

Nonetheless, he has expressed openness to remaining in his role, having successfully guided the team to the top of Group D with victories over Paraguay and Australia. “Now we’re focused on the World Cup,” Pochettino stated earlier this month, adding, “Then, if we want to stay, we have months to talk, or days or weeks. Because it’s four years until the next World Cup.”

Following impressive performances before home supporters, US Soccer remains optimistic about their prospects in the competition. In contrast, Bosnia’s journey has been mixed; they ended their group stage with a lackluster draw against Canada and a heavy defeat to Switzerland, but managed a 3-1 victory over Qatar to close out their group campaign.

The road ahead is fraught with challenges, yet the dynamics of international football ensure that the stakes remain high. As the tournament unfolds, both teams will be keen to seize this pivotal moment for advancement and legacy in the World Cup narrative.
