PETA raises concerns over live animal mascots in sports

PETA has expressed significant concerns regarding the use of live animal mascots in sports venues, arguing that such practices are detrimental to the animals’ well-being, reports BritPanorama.

The organisation stated that forcing eagles and similar creatures into stadiums diminishes their ability to engage in natural behaviours, as these birds “would naturally avoid humans,” leading to “frustration and stress.” PETA highlighted its “detailed records” documenting instances of injuries and fatalities among live mascots due to collisions with various surfaces, as well as a notable incident where a falcon injured a spectator.

In one particular case from 2017, a Charlton Athletic supporter was convicted for attempting to punch a live eagle mascot during a League Cup match, further illustrating the risks involved.

Dr Carys Bennett, PETA’s senior corporate projects manager, emphasised that many professional sports clubs now rely solely on costumed performers rather than live animals to provide entertainment for fans, suggesting a shift in perspective on how to engage audiences without compromising animal welfare.

This dialogue around animal welfare in sports highlights a growing awareness and concern within the industry, as clubs weigh the traditional allure of live mascots against modern ethical standards. The case underscores a wider reckoning in sports culture about the responsibilities of entertainment providers toward both their audiences and the creatures they showcase.
