Oliver Glasner reflects on Crystal Palace's European triumph and his departure

Crystal Palace claims first European trophy with Conference League victory

Crystal Palace has secured their first-ever European trophy, achieving a 1-0 victory against Rayo Vallecano in the Conference League final held in Leipzig, reports BritPanorama.

The triumph took place on Wednesday night, with Jean-Philippe Mateta scoring the decisive goal in the 51st minute, marking a historic moment for the south London club.

This victory served as the perfect farewell gift for departing manager Oliver Glasner, who guided the Eagles to glory in what was his final match in charge. Mateta capitalised on a rebound after Rayo keeper Augusto Batalla could only parry Adam Wharton’s powerful strike, igniting jubilant celebrations among the travelling Palace supporters.

In a statement to TNT Sports following the match, Glasner expressed gratitude towards everyone involved in his tenure at Selhurst Park. “In London, the fans say thank you to us for giving them the best days. I say thank you to the players because it’s the same for me,” he said.

Reflecting on his departure, Glasner added, “These are great and incredible days in my life. They are always listening, supporting me, trusting in me and believing in what I told them,” underscoring the collective effort behind their success rather than individual brilliance.

The 51-year-old manager also shared a light-hearted moment, performing a celebratory slide across the pitch reminiscent of Jurgen Klinsmann, the action prompted by teammate Daichi Kamada. “I’m still very quick. It’s good for an almost 52-year-old,” he laughed.

For Mateta, the goal represented a significant turnaround, as he had been close to leaving Palace for AC Milan earlier in the year, only for injury to impede the move. Once a target of frustration for supporters, his strike in Leipzig has now immortalised him in the club’s history, complete with his trademark corner-flag kick celebration.

Defensively, Palace demonstrated resilience, with goalkeeper Dean Henderson earning a clean sheet as Rayo pressed for an equaliser throughout the second half. The Eagles’ steadfast defence was crucial in maintaining their narrow lead.

In a season defined by highs and lows, Crystal Palace’s inaugural European trophy serves not only as a milestone for the club but also as a reminder of the unpredictable yet thrilling nature of football, where triumph and despair often walk hand in hand on the pitch.
