Novak Djokovic issues apology after contentious moment with Wimbledon crowd during victory

Djokovic sets Wimbledon record despite controversy

Novak Djokovic achieved his 106th men’s singles victory at Wimbledon, surpassing Roger Federer’s previous record at the All England Club. The Serbian veteran triumphed over Roman Safiullin with a score of 7-6(6), 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to secure his place in the quarter-finals, reports BritPanorama.

However, the milestone was overshadowed by a heated incident during the third set. Djokovic, 39, received a code violation after seemingly shouting obscenities in Serbian when he fell behind 2-0. This moment came amidst a match where Djokovic struggled under the intense heat.

The Centre Court crowd reacted unfavourably shortly thereafter when Safiullin struck a powerful forehand toward Djokovic, forcing him to evade the ball with notable agility. Djokovic’s frustration was evident when he smashed a loose ball out of play following the point, drawing boos from the audience.

Experts and commentators weighed in, with BBC’s Tim Henman noting that Djokovic had already been warned. John McEnroe recalled Djokovic’s previous altercations with officials, including a notable incident at the US Open when he was disqualified for unintentionally hitting a lineswoman.

In an on-court interview with BBC pundit Annabel Croft, Djokovic acknowledged his emotional outbursts, apologising for his conduct. “And the outbursts as well… The outbursts, you know, the meltdowns. I had a few of those today. I apologise,” he stated, before clarifying that these reactions are not something he takes pride in.

Despite reaching his 17th Wimbledon quarter-final and 66th major last-eight appearance, Djokovic expressed dissatisfaction with his performance. “To be honest, haven’t felt really great on the court, so I was just relieved to get out of it and get a win,” he confessed. He attributed his struggles to the pressure exerted by Safiullin rather than any physical ailments.

Djokovic now awaits the outcome of the match between third seed Felix Auger-Aliassime and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, with a potential semi-final clash against defending champion Jannik Sinner on the horizon.

It’s a notable chapter in Djokovic’s storied career, and as always in tennis, the line between triumph and turmoil remains perilously thin.
