Specifically, adults with lower levels of aspartate transaminase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT) enzymes were found to have a higher incidence of early-onset colorectal cancer compared to their counterparts, reports BritPanorama.

According to an analysis by Epic Research, those in the specified age group with reduced AST and ALT levels exhibited a significantly heightened risk of being diagnosed with colorectal cancer at a young age. The findings, which have yet to undergo peer review, challenge the conventional clinical focus on elevated liver enzyme levels as a risk factor for various malignancies.

Kersten Bartelt, a clinician at Epic Research, highlighted that this correlation is contrary to typical medical assumptions, where higher liver enzyme levels generally signify health issues. While this study pinpoints a concerning trend, clinicians advise against alarm; low AST or ALT results alone do not necessitate immediate action such as early colonoscopies.

This association warrants further investigation into the causes of rising colorectal cancer rates among younger individuals. It does not imply that low liver enzyme levels directly contribute to cancer risk, but rather suggests that they may highlight underlying metabolic conditions that merit further study. The research underscores the complexity of colorectal cancer epidemiology without drawing concrete conclusions or altering current screening guidelines.

Cancer rising among younger ages

The rise in colorectal cancer among younger adults is a growing concern, now recognized as the leading cause of cancer deaths in Americans under 50. Experts like Dr. Marc Fenster emphasize the need for understanding why this demographic faces increasing rates of early-onset colorectal cancer. He suggests that recognizing biomarkers to identify those at risk could enhance screening efforts.

As recommended by the American Cancer Society, average-risk adults should commence screening for colorectal cancer at age 45. However, blood testing has emerged as a viable screening option, complementing traditional methods such as colonoscopies.

Conversations surrounding early-onset colorectal cancer have largely revolved around factors like family history, metabolic health, and lifestyle choices, but the current research may open up new avenues for inquiry regarding metabolic markers in conjunction with cancer risk.

Research data from over 11,000 individuals aged 18 to 44, who underwent colorectal cancer screening from 2017 to 2025, reveals a stark contrast in the risk profiles based on their AST levels. Adults with AST levels below 14 units per liter had a 65% greater likelihood of early-onset colorectal cancer diagnoses.

While these findings are significant, caution is advised. Clinical experts, including Dr. Daniel Sussman, remind that low AST or ALT levels should not precipitate unwarranted screening among those without symptoms or significant risk factors. Instead, these revelations should inspire continuous research and discussion among healthcare professionals regarding effective early detection strategies.

As the conversation on colorectal cancer evolves, the implications of routine metabolic tests in cancer risk assessment remain a critical area for future exploration. The question of how these findings relate to broader populations and other health metrics will likely shape forthcoming research efforts.
