Fitzpatrick brothers make history in PGA Tour win

Matt Fitzpatrick and his brother, Alex, achieved a landmark victory by becoming the first siblings to secure a PGA Tour event win at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans pairs tournament, held at TPC Louisiana, reports BritPanorama.

The Fitzpatrick brothers showcased impressive skills as they secured their triumph in a thrilling finish. Matt arrived at the event in excellent form, coming off two victories, including the RBC Heritage just a week prior. However, despite starting the final round with a solid four-stroke lead following a record-setting performance on Saturday, the brothers faced intense pressure.

Things took a turn on the back nine when the Fitzpatricks stumbled with a double bogey on the 12th hole and another dropped shot at the 14th. These mistakes allowed their competitors, Norwegian duo Kristoffer Reitan and Kristoffer Ventura, along with American pair Alex Smalley and Hayden Springer, to close the gap significantly.

As the brothers reached the final hole, they were faced with a challenge to secure their lead. Despite Alex hitting into a bunker, a crucial shot from Matt set up a simple putt for his younger brother, clinching their victory. The Fitzpatricks finished at 31 under par, a notable achievement that not only highlighted their golfing prowess but also earned Alex his tour card through 2028, allowing him to participate in high-profile events, including the upcoming PGA Championship.

While Alex was already on track in the Race to Dubai rankings, the brothers’ victory accelerated his path to full PGA Tour status. Following the win, Alex reflected, “To be sat here doing it with him is the craziest thing ever,” emphasising the significance of their shared success. Meanwhile, Matt, who won the 2022 US Open, praised his brother’s performance, stating, “It means the world. I’m absolutely speechless. He was unbelievable, and I could not be more proud.”

This historic win underscores the importance of familial bonds in competitive sports, illustrating how teamwork can lead to triumph in the most high-pressure situations.
