Frustration among France’s World Cup squad ahead of tournament
Emmanuel Macron’s meeting with France’s World Cup squad has been overshadowed by reports of growing frustration among Didier Deschamps’ players ahead of the tournament, reports BritPanorama.
During discussions with French Football Federation officials, team members expressed dissatisfaction regarding the allocation of tickets for family and friends during the World Cup. Each squad member was informed they would receive two complimentary tickets per match, with the option to purchase an additional six. This allocation reportedly disappointed many players, who believe it is inadequate considering the scale of the tournament and the extensive travel for supporters.
As reported by French outlet L’Equipe, the decision led to tense exchanges within the camp, with players voicing their disappointment during meetings with federation representatives. This situation arises just months after the squad accepted a revised structure that could see bonus payments deferred until later rounds in an effort to increase the overall prize pool, which had been met positively by the players.
The discussions took place on the day the squad gathered at Clairefontaine, the national training centre, for official photographs with Macron and his wife, Brigitte. Macron, maintaining close ties with the team, recently hosted several players at the Elysee Palace, including prominent figures such as Ousmane Dembele and Lucas Hernandez.
France are expected to depart for North America next week as they prepare for another World Cup challenge. They will play two friendly matches on home soil before heading across the Atlantic. The 2018 tournament winners and 2022 runners-up will be based near Boston for much of the competition, starting their campaign against Senegal in New Jersey on June 16, followed by fixtures against Iraq and Norway.
Despite being placed in what many consider a challenging group, France remains a strong contender for the trophy. The squad, featuring talent like Kylian Mbappe and rising star Rayan Cherki, is under significant pressure to perform as expectations are high once again.
The expanded tournament format increases the likelihood of progression beyond the group stage, further underlining the stakes for a team expected to make a deep run. However, the dissatisfaction over ticket allocations may complicate morale as they embark on this high-stakes journey.
As the team gears up, it’s clear that in the world of football, even the mightiest can be brought low by disappointments in the fine print.
