Leeds manager criticises Manchester City's tactics after narrow defeat at the Etihad

Farke criticises City player for feigning injury during last-minute defeat

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke has hit out at what he described as a Manchester City player faking an injury to enable an extra team talk during Saturday’s dramatic 3-2 defeat at the Etihad Stadium, reports BritPanorama.

The German tactician expressed his frustration following Phil Foden’s stoppage-time winner that denied Leeds a remarkable point after they had battled back from two goals down.

Speaking after the match, Farke acknowledged that the tactic fell within current regulations whilst making his displeasure evident. He stated, “Everyone knows why he went down. It’s within the rules and it’s smart.”

Farke further reflected on fair play, remarking, “If I like it in the sense of fair play. I keep it to myself. Leave it to the authorities to find a solution.” He revealed he had raised the issue with match officials, asking the fourth official, who responded that “our hands are tied.”

“My recommendation was if this happens, do me a favour and give one for the away team,” he added. Farke clarified that he did not criticise his fellow manager, Pep Guardiola, stating, “It was the player.”

The visitors’ resurgence began with substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s half-time introduction, proving transformative. The striker capitalised on Matheus Nunes’s defensive error to reduce the deficit, before earning a penalty after being brought down by Josko Gvardiol. Although Lukas Nmecha’s initial spot-kick was saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma, the midfielder converted the rebound to complete an unlikely comeback.

Despite City appearing in complete control at the interval, Leeds delivered a spirited response. However, Foden’s decisive strike in 10 minutes of added time ensured three points for City, leaving Farke’s side empty-handed despite their commendable resilience.

In the end, this match was a reminder that in football, the finest margins dictate outcomes, and yet, the questions of fairness and tactics linger long after the final whistle.
