Kobbie Mainoo commits future to Manchester United with long-term deal
Manchester United has announced that Kobbie Mainoo has committed his future to the club by penning a new long-term deal that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2031, reports BritPanorama.
The 21-year-old England international will see his weekly wages rise dramatically from approximately £25,000 to £150,000 — a remarkable 500 per cent increase and his first pay rise since the age of 17.
Negotiations had been ongoing since last year, with significant progress made in January between the midfielder’s representatives and club officials. Mainoo’s path to this contract extension was not straightforward.
The academy graduate requested a loan departure during Ruben Amorim’s tenure in the January window but was refused. He subsequently reclaimed his place in the starting lineup under interim boss Michael Carrick.
Upon confirmation of his extended stay, Mainoo expressed his deep attachment to the club where he has spent his entire footballing life. “Manchester United has always been my home; this special club means everything to my family,” he said.
“I have grown up seeing the impact that our club has on our city, and I relish the responsibility that comes with wearing this shirt.”
The midfielder reflected on his progression through United’s youth setup, describing his journey “from The Cliff, to Littleton Road, to Carrington and ultimately Old Trafford” as incredible. “We can all feel the momentum building inside the club. I am determined to step up and play my role in helping Manchester United to regularly fight for major trophies in the years ahead,” Mainoo added.
Jason Wilcox, United’s technical director, heaped praise on the young midfielder following the announcement. “Kobbie is one of the most naturally gifted young footballers in the world,” Wilcox stated. “His technical ability, dedicated professionalism and humble personality make him the perfect role model for our young players and a true credit to our outstanding Academy system.”
The club official expressed confidence in Mainoo’s trajectory, declaring that United are certain he will develop into one of the finest players globally. “We are delighted that Kobbie has extended his stay here and have full confidence that he will develop into one of the best players in the world, ready to play a pivotal role in a Manchester United team challenging for the biggest honours,” Wilcox added.
Mainoo has been in outstanding form for the Red Devils, featuring from the start in 13 of their previous 14 matches. His impressive performances at club level have also reignited his international career. After spending 18 months outside the England setup, the midfielder has been brought back into the fold by Thomas Tuchel.
He featured in both of England’s recent friendly fixtures ahead of the manager naming his provisional World Cup squad this summer. Looking ahead, United are anticipated to pursue a defensive midfield partner for Mainoo during the transfer window, with Casemiro set to depart on a free transfer at the end of the season.
As United look to reshape their squad and build around emerging talents like Mainoo, the tension between retaining experienced players and creating space for youth remains palpable. The upcoming transfer window will be pivotal for the club’s ambitions.
