Kimi Antonelli triumphs at Silverstone

Kimi Antonelli produced a statement drive at Silverstone as the Mercedes teenager hunted down Lewis Hamilton to win a thrilling British Grand Prix sprint race, reports BritPanorama.

The 19-year-old Italian showed patience, pace, and precision before passing the Ferrari driver on lap eight, extending his championship lead to 43 points over team-mate George Russell in the process.

Hamilton had started strongly and defended bravely at the front, but Antonelli looked the quicker man once the race settled after a chaotic opening phase. Behind the leaders, Lando Norris, Russell, and Max Verstappen were involved in a frantic early scrap as the order changed repeatedly during the initial laps.

Norris capitalised on the chaos, charging from sixth on the grid to fourth by the end of the first lap before getting ahead of Russell soon afterwards. As the chasing pack fought among themselves, Antonelli kept his focus fixed on Hamilton, making an initial attempt at Brooklands but unable to overtake, prompting him to bide his time before launching an attack on the Hangar Straight.

With the wind blowing down the back straight, the Mercedes came alive as Antonelli swept past Hamilton to take control of the race. From there, he expertly managed the gap, never looking likely to surrender victory. “It was a very fun first 10 laps with Lewis,” Antonelli said. “We were both pushing very hard. When I got into overtake (mode), I knew my chance was coming.”

Hamilton acknowledged afterwards that Ferrari struggled to contain the straight-line speed of the Mercedes. “Tough race to keep the Mercedes behind, as I said it might be,” Hamilton remarked. “And with it being so windy today, big headwind down the back straight, he came flying past. We have work to do to try and close that gap as we can keep up.”

Norris eventually secured third after an impressive performance in front of the home crowd, overtaking Russell and pulling away from the battle behind him. “It was a very good race,” the McLaren driver noted. “I’m very, very happy, good start, good first lap, not the pace to go with these guys but had a good battle with George. Pleasantly surprised.”

Meanwhile, Russell recovered to pass Verstappen on lap nine, with the Red Bull driver losing another position to Charles Leclerc shortly after. Verstappen ultimately settled for sixth after defending against Oscar Piastri in the closing stages. Further back, Liam Lawson withstood late pressure from Isack Hadjar, with both taking home the final points.

Attention now turns to qualifying for Sunday’s British Grand Prix, set to take place at 4pm on Saturday. The day will no doubt bring its share of interest as teams and drivers push to perfect their setups after this exciting sprint.
