Kieran McKenna steps down as Ipswich Town head coach
Kieran McKenna has decided to leave his position as Ipswich Town head coach, opting to step away from football entirely, reports BritPanorama.
The 40-year-old manager will not be moving to Fulham or any other club for the foreseeable future. This decision comes despite McKenna being Fulham’s primary candidate to succeed Marco Silva. Recently, he had guided the Tractor Boys back to the top flight after a commanding performance following their relegation.
His departure marks the end of a transformative spell at Portman Road, which began in December 2021. Ipswich have secured financial safeguards, should their former boss decide to return to management within the next year. The club stands to receive compensation, reportedly valued at approximately £7 million, reflecting the time remaining on McKenna’s contract.
McKenna posted a statement after his decision, writing: “It is with a mixture of gratitude, pride, sadness and contentment that I have decided to step down from the honour of managing this historic football club. When you have the connection that we have built at this club there is never a good time to say goodbye.” He noted the achievement of securing a second promotion to the Premier League last season and expressed hope for the future of the club.
McKenna began his tenure with Ipswich as the club languished in mid-table of the third tier, following an embarrassing FA Cup exit. From those humble beginnings, he orchestrated consecutive promotions, culminating in Ipswich’s return to the Premier League, ending a 22-year absence from English football’s top division.
Despite the speculations around his potential move to Fulham, McKenna has opted to take a break from management, indicating a desire to dedicate time to his family. This reflective pause in his career points to the complexities of the managerial role and the personal sacrifices that accompany it.
As McKenna prepares for life beyond the touchline, it serves as a reminder of the dualities of football’s demands — where triumph and tribulation often intertwine, and the most profound journeys can lead to unexpected turns.
