Jamie Carragher criticizes Liverpool after PSG defeat as Champions League hopes dim

Liverpool falter against PSG in Champions League defeat

Jamie Carragher has torn into Liverpool, and manager Arne Slot, following their 2-0 Champions League defeat to PSG at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday night. Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia struck to give the Ligue 1 giants a healthy advantage ahead of the second leg at Anfield next week, reports BritPanorama.

Liverpool entered the match hoping to recover from recent domestic losses against Brighton and Manchester City. However, the Merseyside titans were second best on the night, with PSG running out worthy winners as they aim to secure Champions League glory for the second consecutive year.

Carragher, speaking on CBS Sports, did not hold back in his assessment following the match, accusing his former side of resembling a “lower division team.” He stated, “That was like watching a team from a lower division. The gulf in class was very worrying from a Liverpool point of view.” He added that the result could have been significantly worse, lamenting that the gulf in quality was “absolutely startling” compared to last season.

Slot opted for a back five in hopes of containing PSG’s attacks. However, defenders Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate struggled throughout the match. Carragher criticized the tactical decision, suggesting that it left Liverpool more exposed than a traditional back four would have. “The manager has tried something but he’s got it massively wrong tactically,” Carragher noted. He expressed concern over the noticeable drop in quality despite Liverpool’s considerable summer spending.

Despite the heavy defeat, Slot appeared to maintain a belief in his side’s potential, suggesting that turning things around in the return leg is still possible. Nonetheless, he conceded that Liverpool were fortunate to escape with just a two-goal deficit.

The challenge now lies in Liverpool’s ability to respond to this setback on home turf. In a season filled with pressure, how they regroup will be telling, not just for their Champions League ambitions but for their standing in European football overall.
