Carragher admits past comments on Casemiro were too harsh
Jamie Carragher has admitted his famous assessment of Casemiro was “too harsh and premature” after the Manchester United midfielder accused him of being disrespectful, reports BritPanorama.
The former Liverpool defender made his original remarks in April 2024 following a significant defeat for United against Crystal Palace. During that time, he stated that Casemiro should recognise his declining performance levels and consider moving to leagues such as the MLS or Saudi Arabia.
“Leave the football before the football leaves you. The football has left him,” Carragher said, expressing concerns about the player’s fitness and physicality.
These comments were revived after Casemiro addressed them in an interview on Rio Ferdinand Presents, where he acknowledged his respect for Carragher’s views while also labelling them as “disrespectful.”
In a recent column for The Telegraph, Carragher reflected on his previous opinions. He stated, “My 2024 remarks were too harsh and premature,” noting that they were not personal but stemmed from a mix of reluctance and sadness regarding Casemiro’s situation as one of football’s outstanding midfielders.
Explaining his original line of thinking, Carragher pointed out that in early 2024, Casemiro was struggling physically and was unable to cope with faster opponents, comparing his performance that night to “a world-class boxer well past his prime who was determined to keep getting into the ring.”
While he acknowledged Casemiro’s noteworthy return to form in the current season—where he has contributed nine league goals and assisted in securing Champions League qualification—Carragher maintained that the midfielder has not consistently matched the high standards set during his illustrious period at Real Madrid.
Moreover, Carragher suggested that the decision by United to allow Casemiro to leave on a free transfer further supports his viewpoint about the player’s current state, highlighting, “There is a reason why the United hierarchy are allowing him to leave.” During his tenure at the club, Casemiro has made nearly 160 appearances and scored 26 goals.
As he approaches his departure following the final two fixtures of the season against Nottingham Forest and Brighton, the Brazilian will leave United on a high note, firmly confirming his place in club history. In the unpredictable world of football, his situation serves as a reminder of how quickly the tide can turn for even the most celebrated players.
