Haaland criticizes officiating after heated clash with Gabriel in Man City’s victory over Arsenal

Haaland comments on referee’s decision following confrontation with Gabriel

Erling Haaland believes Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes would have received a red card had he chosen to fall to the ground instead of standing his ground during their heated confrontation on Sunday at the Etihad Stadium, reports BritPanorama.

The incident occurred in the closing stages of the Premier League match when a physical exchange escalated after Haaland pushed Gabriel during a stoppage in play. The two players faced off, with Gabriel appearing to thrust his head toward the Norwegian, which typically would constitute violent conduct.

Despite the aggressive nature of the clash, referee Anthony Taylor issued only a yellow card, a decision that surprised many pundits and supporters given the intensity of the interaction.

Post-match, Haaland suggested that the outcome might have differed had he played up the contact more. “I think if I fell on the floor there, which I would not do unless someone really attacks me, I think maybe it would be a red card,” he explained. He expressed confusion over the yellow card, stating, “He comes up to my face, it is what it is.” Haaland also voiced his frustration about the referee’s reasoning, noting that Taylor attributed blame to both players.

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville echoed this confusion, stating on Sky Sports, “I can’t believe that’s not a red to be honest.” Many are questioning the consistency in officiating when similar confrontations arise.

Earlier in the match, Haaland had secured the victory for Manchester City by scoring the decisive goal in the second half, following an equaliser from Kai Havertz after Rayan Cherki’s opening strike. This win positions City just three points behind Arsenal in the Premier League standings, with a chance to reclaim the top spot if they win their game in hand against Burnley.

The Premier League has defended the officiating, stating in an official statement that VAR reviewed the incident and upheld Taylor’s decision, asserting that Gabriel’s actions were “deemed not to be excessively aggressive or violent,” justifying the yellow card rather than a dismissal.

As the debate continues over the incident, it serves as a reminder of the complexities in football officiating — where perceptions of fairness often diverge sharply from the decisions made on the pitch.
