Former Arsenal goalkeeper Alexander Manninger dies in train collision

Former Arsenal goalkeeper Alexander Manninger has died at the age of 48 after his vehicle was hit by a regional train at an unguarded railway crossing in Austria this morning, reports BritPanorama.

The collision occurred at approximately 8:20am near the village of Nußdorf am Haunsberg in the Salzburg region, with Manninger’s VW minivan being dragged several metres along the track. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle at the time of the incident.

Emergency services, including the Red Cross and volunteer firefighters from Nußdorf, rushed to the scene following the crash, which transpired just beyond the Pabing stop. Rescuers extracted Manninger from the wreckage and attempted resuscitation, deploying a defibrillator, but despite these efforts, he could not be revived.

The approximately 25 passengers on the local train during the collision were uninjured, along with the driver. Manninger’s vehicle sustained severe damage from the impact. The public prosecutor’s office has contracted forensic expert Gerhard Kronreif to reconstruct the events leading to the fatal collision.

Kronreif noted that due to the type of vehicle involved, it may be possible to analyse the electronic data to evaluate the driver’s behaviour prior to the crash. Investigators will also examine data recorded by the train to create a comprehensive account of the incident.

A key aspect of the investigation will focus on whether the warning signals at the unguarded crossing activated correctly and in sufficient time. The precise circumstances surrounding the collision remain unclear at this time.

Manninger was born in Salzburg on 4 June 1977 and developed his skills through the Austria Salzburg youth system. After stints with Vorwärts Steyr and GAK, he secured a move to Arsenal in 1997, marking the start of an impressive international career, during which he also represented Austria 33 times.

His passing not only brings a somber cloud over the football community but serves as a reminder of the fragility of life, even for those who seemed invincible on the pitch.
