FIFA cancels free World Cup tickets due to error

Football fans who believed they secured free tickets for the 2026 World Cup are faced with disappointment following FIFA’s cancellation of their bookings, reports BritPanorama. Approximately 60 supporters benefited from a website glitch that granted them complimentary access on May 21.

However, the excitement was short-lived. On Wednesday, FIFA informed those affected that their bookings had been nullified due to a payment-processing error during the checkout process.

The glitch occurred during a routine transaction on FIFA’s official ticketing site, impacting a limited number of group-stage matches in Toronto. FIFA clarified that the issue resulted not from hacking but from an internal technical fault that allowed some transactions to bypass the final payment step.

According to FIFA’s statement, “FIFA regrets the error and any inconvenience caused.” Those who initially secured the $0 tickets now face a tight seven-day deadline to pay the full price or forfeit their seats entirely. Many fans took to social media to voice their frustrations, with calls for accountability directed at FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

“Gianni please step down,” one user commented, while another lamented, “FIFA really are the worst, too much power with no accountability to anyone.” This incident emerges just weeks before the tournament’s commencement on June 11, exacerbating existing discontent over FIFA’s ticketing system, which has already faced criticism for lengthy virtual queuing and exorbitant ticket prices.

Adding to the woes, FIFA’s official resale platform previously drew ire when it listed four seats for the final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey for a staggering nearly $2.3 million each. Concerns surrounding accessibility and pricing continue to mount as authorities in New York, New Jersey, and California investigate FIFA’s practices related to ticket transparency.

As the global football community watches with bated breath, the latest ticketing fiasco serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing complications within FIFA’s operations and the challenges fans encounter in securing places at major tournaments.
