England faces potential delays in World Cup campaign

England could face lengthy delays during their World Cup campaign amid growing concerns over extreme weather in the United States, reports BritPanorama.

With thunderstorms expected to pose a threat throughout the tournament, Thomas Tuchel’s side may find themselves waiting hours for matches to resume should severe conditions affect host cities. Tournament organisers are preparing contingency plans for weather disruption, but reports indicate that FIFA may be reluctant to abandon fixtures entirely, even if delays become significant.

Instead, the governing body is anticipated to assess each incident on a case-by-case basis, aiming to complete matches wherever possible. This approach could create major challenges for players, supporters, and broadcasters alike.

England’s group-stage schedule includes late afternoon kick-offs in Boston and New York, two venues where summer thunderstorms regularly occur. If severe weather were to move into the area, matches could be halted for extended periods while officials await improved conditions. However, the Three Lions’ opening fixture against Croatia may avoid such concerns, thanks to the closed-roof stadium in Dallas.

Later matches, however, could be more susceptible to interruption. There are indications that concerns surrounding scheduling and maintaining the integrity of the competition make it unlikely that games would be abandoned and rescheduled. The focus is expected to remain on completing fixtures whenever it is deemed safe to proceed.

A similar situation unfolded during last year’s Club World Cup in the United States, where Chelsea’s clash with Benfica in Charlotte was suspended for nearly two hours after lightning was detected in the vicinity. The lengthy delay sparked frustration, with then-Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca questioning the suitability of the country for hosting major tournaments. When play did resume, Benfica scored a dramatic late equaliser before Chelsea ultimately secured a 4-1 victory after extra time.

The contest concluded over four and a half hours after kick-off, illustrating the potential disruptions teams could encounter should storms impact key fixtures during this summer’s World Cup. England has been closely monitoring weather forecasts ahead of upcoming friendly matches in Florida, where thunderstorms are common during the summer months. However, recent forecasts for these preparatory matches have shown improvement.

Even so, concerns persist regarding the tournament’s start. England kicks off their World Cup campaign against Croatia on June 17, followed by matches against Ghana and Panama in the group stage.

As the tournament approaches, the cloud of uncertainty lingers—one of those familiar reminders that, within the striking theatre of sport, even the most robust plans can be undone by nature’s whim. The excitement of the World Cup is palpable, yet its frailty is equally evident when the skies threaten to intervene.
