England faces fresh injury concerns ahead of World Cup clash
England manager Thomas Tuchel is contending with new injury issues as the team prepares for its final group-stage match against Panama, with both Reece James and Declan Rice absent from training on Thursday, reports BritPanorama.
The Three Lions returned to their Kansas City base after a frustrating goalless draw with Ghana, with plans now focused on meeting Panama at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Saturday.
Neither James nor Rice participated in the session held two days before the critical Group L encounter, putting Tuchel in a position to make significant tactical decisions as England aims to secure top spot in the group and advance to the knockout stages.
James is considered the more pressing concern. The Chelsea defender sustained a minor hamstring issue during the game against Ghana, and his fitness will be monitored closely in the days leading up to the match. Even if cleared to play, Tuchel might opt to rest him against an opponent ranked 42nd in the world, especially as James has featured in two matches within a week.
The England manager has historically managed James’s deployment cautiously, given his previous injury challenges. Should he be unavailable, Tuchel has alternatives in Bayer Leverkusen’s Jarell Quansah or Djed Spence, both of whom could slot into the right-back position.
Rice’s absence is less alarming. The Arsenal midfielder was spotted with strapping on his left calf following the Ghana match, reportedly suffering a dead leg during that contest. Having played 64 matches this season for club and country, Rice is eager to contribute if called upon.
However, Tuchel may choose to rotate his midfield dynamic, particularly with a looming disciplinary issue for Rice, who picked up a yellow card in the match against Ghana. Another booking against Panama would result in a suspension for England’s first knockout fixture should they progress.
With the squad expected to train again on Friday before heading to New York, England remains atop Group L and knows victory over Panama would guarantee first place. The last meeting with Panama at the 2018 World Cup saw England secure a decisive 6-1 victory, with Harry Kane netting a hat-trick.
As tournament stakes rise, the strategic fallout from player fitness could shape England’s prospects significantly, making this a pivotal juncture for Tuchel and his selections as the World Cup advances.
