Emma Raducanu provides encouraging health update
Emma Raducanu has delivered some welcome news for tennis fans, revealing she’s on the mend after a frustrating spell on the sidelines, reports BritPanorama.
The British No. 1 responded to a supporter on Instagram earlier today, offering a brief but encouraging update on her health. When a fan expressed hope that she was recovering well, the 23-year-old replied: “Much better thank you x”.
This marks the first positive sign from Raducanu since a viral illness forced her to withdraw from three consecutive tournaments, including the Miami Open, Upper Austria Ladies Linz, and most recently the Madrid Open. The illness seemed to take hold during her impressive run to the Transylvania Open final, where medical staff monitored her condition as she faced Sorana Cirstea.
Raducanu’s challenges did not stop there; rather than allowing herself time to recuperate, she returned to the court just 48 hours later for the Doha event, but was forced to retire in the third set. Following this, her performance suffered further setbacks: a first-round exit in Dubai was followed by only one victory at Indian Wells, culminating in a heavy defeat to Amanda Anisimova. This last competitive match took place more than seven weeks ago.
There is, however, optimism for her return. Raducanu has been back in training, and there are hopes she will participate in the Italian Open next week. Although she withdrew from Madrid, reports indicate she is eyeing a comeback in Rome. If all goes well, she aims to be fit for the French Open, commencing on 24th May, despite having yet to progress past the second round in Paris.
Questions remain regarding her support team upon her return. Raducanu parted ways with Spanish coach Francisco Roig in January and has since been travelling with hitting partner Alexis Canter and physio Emma Stewart. She has clarified that she is not currently looking for a permanent replacement, signalling a period of transition both on and off the court.
As the tennis world watches her recovery closely, Raducanu’s journey serves as a reminder of the complexities athletes face, balancing health and competitive ambitions — a fine line often tested by the rigours of professional sports.
