Emma Raducanu faces fitness battle ahead of US Open

Emma Raducanu is grappling with a potential absence from the US Open following the revelation of a grade-four stress fracture in her shin, as demonstrated through MRI imaging that confirmed a visible fracture line, reports BritPanorama.

The injury compelled the 22-year-old to withdraw from Wimbledon just prior to her scheduled opening match. Recovery from such a fracture could extend up to eight weeks, although Raducanu is said to be actively working to hasten her rehabilitation process.

With the year’s final grand slam set to kick off on 30 August, a return to Flushing Meadows could still be feasible if her recuperation proceeds smoothly. The recent grass-court tournament saw her achieve four victories before being bested by Donna Vekic in the championship match.

This tournament, however, has taken a toll. During the final weekend at Queen’s, Raducanu faced the challenge of completing three matches within a compressed 28-hour timeframe, a surge in physical demand that appears to have triggered her shin injury, resulting in missed practice sessions leading up to Wimbledon.

Adding to her difficulties, Raducanu’s competitive year has been hampered by a series of health issues. She managed only 17 competitive matches before reaching the Queen’s Club final, and she still harbours hopes for a solid performance in New York.

Another setback occurred at the Wuhan Open, where she was forced to retire in the first round against Ann Li after trailing 6-1, 4-1, battling dizziness in high humidity and heat conditions.

Despite showing promise against top-tier players, Raducanu has faced challenges, unable to convert match points against both Barbora Krejcikova in Seoul and Jessica Pegula in Beijing, with both matches slipping from her grasp in deciding sets.

As the US Open approaches, it remains to be seen if Raducanu can overcome these hurdles. It serves as yet another reminder of the fine line athletes must walk between ambition and the strains of their demanding profession.
