Dutch referee Rob Dieperink dies at 38

Dutch football referee Rob Dieperink has died at the age of 38, weeks after being removed from FIFA’s list of match officials for this summer’s World Cup, reports BritPanorama.

The Dutch Football Association (KNVB) confirmed Dieperink’s death on Monday, stating they were “shocked and deeply saddened” by the news. The details surrounding his death remain unclear, with local police reportedly conducting an inquiry after a deceased individual was found in the street near his residence.

Dieperink had been selected as an official for the World Cup, but was removed from the list in connection with an earlier incident in the United Kingdom involving allegations of sexual assault against a teenage boy. While he denied the allegations, the Metropolitan Police investigated but ultimately found insufficient evidence to bring charges.

Following the conclusion of the investigation, Dieperink expressed his frustration at the impact on his career, stating that he had been “wrongly accused” and had cooperated with authorities throughout. “It is a pity that FIFA has decided not to appoint me for the World Cup. I am, of course, disappointed about that,” he commented at the time.

The KNVB highlighted Dieperink’s international experience and commitment to the game in their tribute. They extended their condolences to his family, friends, and the refereeing community, recognizing the loss of a valued colleague. While the circumstances of his death are currently being explored, Dutch authorities have not indicated any link between this and the prior investigation in the UK.

This situation serves as a sobering reminder of the fragility of careers within sports officiating, where allegations can cast long shadows, even when resolutions are reached. The impact of such events resonates beyond the individual, touching on broader discussions about accountability and integrity in sports.
